WebTrust - Assuring Integrity on the
Internet
The biggest concerns when making a purchase on the internet are "Will
I get what I ordered?" and "Will someone steal...and use...my
credit card number?" These concerns are real, because examples of
this behavior happens everyday. Perpetrated by scam artists and thieves,
these practices have affected the choice we make as consumers when considering
an on-line purchase.
How can we prevent ourselves and our companies from
falling victim to these scams? In theory it's easy, only use reliable businesses
to secure our goods and services. But, in reality, how do we know who is
reliable?
That's where the AICPA comes in. They have developed
a program called WebTrust. With this program, they will certify websites
that meet the WebTrust
criterion for business practices
and information control.
On-line consumers need a program like this for their protection. And
business owners will be well served by participating in these endeavors.
